Gharials released back into their historical range in West Rapti

Gharials were once widely distributed in many rivers throughout Nepal but currently, they only occupy 2% of their historical range. Recognizing that the West Rapti River historically fell within the natural range of the Gharials, the translocation of the Gharials there will aid in reducing their vulnerability.

Ten gharials—nine females and one male—from the Gharial Breeding Center in Chitwan were translocated and released in their potential habitat in Banke National Park's West Rapti River.

This video documentary captures the entire process of Gharial Translocation which is divided into five phases: Capture, Transfer, Transport, Release and Monitoring.

The translocation process was made possible under the leadership of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) with support from Wildlife Adaptation Innovation Fund and WWF Nepal.
