Alice Gillaroo
ALICE GILLAROO grew up in Southern California and earned a master’s in social work at the University of Utah. She served as executive director for three nonprofits: Transition House, a shelter for homeless families; the Fund for Santa Barbara, a community foundation dedicated to social change and social justice; and Central Coast Congregate Care, which provides low-income housing for people living with HIV. In the process, she built community support for services that bring to the fore controversial issues such as homelessness, poverty, and homophobia. Now retired, she volunteers as a board member for causes including environmental protection, child abuse, Alzheimer’s disease, and breast cancer. This year she was elected to the Board of Directors of Dunn School, a progressive and independent school in the Santa Ynez Valley. Most recently, she served as capital campaign chair for a senior low-income housing project.
