The Coca-Cola Company

Creating a more resilient and water-secure future for people, nature, and business

Overview

The Coca-Cola Company Logo

In 2007, WWF and The Coca-Cola Company (Coca-Cola) launched a groundbreaking partnership that spanned more than 50 countries and focused on securing freshwater resources. Over the years, we expanded our work beyond water to improve environmental performance across Coca-Cola’s supply chain, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Our world is changing at an alarmingly rapid pace due to the climate crisis. It’s not enough to only focus on sustainability. We also need to prioritize resilience and consider the interplay among the climate crisis, freshwater, agriculture, and more.

Recognizing this new reality, WWF and The Coca-Cola Company renewed our partnership for three more years in August 2021. Together, we plan to help communities that face barriers become more resilient in the face of the climate crisis and water stresses, work to reimagine how we source agricultural ingredients, and strive to transform packaging to prevent waste across Coca-Cola’s operating units.

To achieve these goals, we seek to catalyze collective action by engaging more than 200 organizations locally in our work around the globe and thinking holistically about how we can create a more resilient and water-secure future for people, nature, and business.

Our Impact

Water Stewardship

Drive innovative, climate-smart solutions to freshwater challenges...

Goals: Drive innovative, climate-smart solutions to freshwater challenges through ecosystem restoration, sustainable agricultural practices, basin-wide community engagement, and comprehensive policy support to tackle a broad range of water issues, from water shortages and pollution to access to clean water.

Progress:

  • Institutionalized water reserves in Guatemala that will safeguard 77.7 billion cubic feet of freshwater resources.
  • Implemented Bonsucro-based Sustainability Guiding Principles to change standard practices for seven sugar mills in Honduras.
  • Moved toward our goal of increasing the Danube River’s capacity by the equivalent of more than 4,800 Olympic-sized swimming pools (about 459 million cubic feet) and to restore more than 13,497 acres of vital wetlands, rivers, and floodplains through nine projects in Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania by the end of 2021.

Climate

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Coca-Cola’s business...

Goals: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Coca-Cola’s business and create pilot projects to design and test climate adaptation and resilience innovations to help Coca-Cola understand and respond to climate risks in the places where it operates.

Progress:

  • Helped Coca-Cola set and achieve a goal to reduce the carbon emissions intensity of the “drink in your hand'' by 25% by 2020 against a 2010 baseline and set a science-based target to reduce absolute green has emissions by 25% by 2030 against a 2015 baseline. This target was validated by the Science Based Targets initiative and is consistent with reductions required to keep global warming to 2°C.
  • Created pilot projects in the Mesoamerican Reef to design and test climate adaptation and resilience innovations to help Coca-Cola understand and respond to climate risks in the places where it operates, for the benefit of people and nature. Co-developed a report, Rising to Resilience: How water stewardship can help business build climate resilience, which provides tools that can help businesses prepare for and respond to climate change’s effects on water resources—the primary medium through which climate change impacts are felt.
  • Improved the health of Canada’s freshwater ecosystems under threat from climate change by supporting community-driven projects that benefit people and nature.

Plastic Waste

Advancing global dialogue and action on how Coca-Cola sources, uses, recycles, and reduces plastic...

Goals: Advance global dialogue and action on how Coca-Cola sources, uses, recycles, and reduces plastic packaging by measuring the company’s global plastic footprint and identifying key interventions to enact and track progress year-over-year.

Progress:

  • Advanced advocacy through the company’s founding roles in coalition initiatives such as ReSource: Plastic, Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance, The Business Case for a UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution report, and U.S. Plastics Pact.
  • Installed recycling machines in public places in South Korea to educate citizens on the importance of better recycling habits and a circular economy.
