This Earth Day, untap one of your most underutilized resources: your employees

Every Earth Month, millions of people around the U.S. pause to appreciate, give back, and show love for the planet through actions big and small. This year, that moment of collective action matters more than ever as nature is under threat from pollution, deforestation, poaching, and more. With this crisis accelerating and the window for meaningful impact narrowing, one of the most powerful, and most underutilized, resources for change is already sitting inside your organization: your employees.

As individuals, we want to make a difference, but often the question is, where to begin? The same question applies to companies. Many organizations have ambitious sustainability commitments on paper. But ambition without activation falls short. And the data reveals a troubling gap as studies suggest around half of Millennials and Gen Zs believe their companies have de-prioritized sustainability, even as roughly three-quarters of business leaders say they've increased their investment.

The good news is that nature is a universal language, and not just for those employees who already identify as environmentalists. In a recent report conducted by WWF and GlobeScan, 73% of people see nature as a defining part of American life and identity. Three out of four Americans surveyed also said, caring for nature is not optional. It is a responsibility shared across society that requires collective action involving individuals, communities, businesses, and government.

The challenge isn’t getting employees to care; it’s giving them a way in.

In honor of Earth Month, WWF has put together resources to make it easier for employees to show love for the planet on April 22 and beyond. Whether you’re looking for something individuals can do today or a company-wide program that builds lasting momentum, there’s a starting point for every organization.

Give an Hour for Earth Campaign

WWF’s annual Give an Hour for Earth campaign is a turnkey, low‑lift way to boost employee engagement through simple, meaningful actions that support the planet. Participants spend one hour doing something positive—hiking, gardening, unplugging, volunteering, or another activity they enjoy—and log their time toward our collective goal of 150,000 hours. Companies can collect hours as an organization, turning individual action into collective momentum.
