Last week 187 countries agreed to a UN pact to improve the global plastic trade through better regulation and transparency. But countries are just one piece of solving our plastic pollution problem. We know governments can’t solve this growing crisis on their own. It will take everyone, including countries, cities, companies, and individuals to get us to our goal of No Plastic in Nature by 2030.
Today, companies have immense ability to drive change to not only reduce their plastic pollution footprint but also engage consumers and governments to change how we use, reuse, and dispose of plastic. They can do this by making ambitious commitments and engaging their supply chains to get rid of the plastic they don’t need while minimizing the negative impact of their products and ensuring the plastic that they put into the market can be recovered for recycling and re-used.
To help companies get started on this path toward change, World Wildlife Fund launched ReSource: Plastic, an activation hub for companies that have made ambitious plastic commitments, but don’t know how to translate those commitments into measurable action given the size of the challenge.
With a goal of preventing 10 million metric tons of plastic waste entering nature by 2030, WWF knows as few as 100 companies have the potential to get us there, and by inspiring action across their sectors and supply chains, this number can triple.
