Nature Finance and Investment
Expanding WWF-US’ role in mobilizing finance to help close the global biodiversity funding gap
We stand at a crucial and challenging moment for nature, for biodiversity, for climate, and for communities worldwide. Without an urgent increase in funding flows to protect and conserve nature, a sustainable planetary future is very much in doubt. Today, roughly USD60 trillion, or more than half of global GDP, is estimated to be moderately or highly dependent on nature. Conserving nature and protecting the world’s most important ecosystems that provide fundamental services such as food, water, and extraordinary health benefits will require new resources and quickly. This will require us to innovate and accelerate efforts to develop and deploy financial solutions at scale in collaboration with governments, corporates, and civil society organizations. And yet, the world is currently investing only about 20% of what’s needed to safeguard ecosystems and the rich variety of life they support. The shortfall—the “nature finance gap”—is estimated to be up to $900 billion every year.
WWF’s newly established Nature Finance and Investment team and partners are unlocking financing solutions for nature, climate, and community. Through high-integrity, high-impact projects, WWF will bring a strategic suite of financial mechanisms, across asset classes and public and private finance, to mobilize further investments in nature that is enriched by WWF’s global reach, expansive partnerships, and deep scientific expertise.
Our pillars
WWF is committed to addressing this significant gap in the nature finance landscape leveraging its track record in mobilizing financing for nature and tapping into growing interests from corporates and capital markets. To do so, WWF is building on and expanding its existing programs such as Project Finance for Permanence (PFP), Nature-Based Solutions Origination Platform, and WWF Impact to deploy an even broader suite of innovative and scaled-up financial solutions and strategic partnerships to help accelerate conservation objectives, address complex environmental challenges, and transform commitments into actionable, investable solutions.
