Esteban Brenes

Senior Director, Conservation Finance, Nature Finance and Investment

Esteban joined WWF’s Conservation Finance team in 2001. Esteban has worked on five debt-for-nature swaps under the US Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA)levering more than 120 million dollars, blended finance, impact investing, design and evaluation of conservation funds, ecosystem services payments, financial sustainability studies for protected areas systems in several countries in Latin America, Madagascar, Bhutan, and Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Prior to joining WWF, Esteban spent five years in the World Bank's Environmental Department, focusing on issues such as carbon emissions trading, natural resource management, and environmental user fees. Prior to his work at the World Bank, Mr. Brenes was an associate attorney with Facio & Cañas, an international law firm in San José, Costa Rica. Mr. Brenes received a law degree from the University of Costa Rica Law School in 1994 and a master's in environmental law from George Washington University in 1996. He is a native Spanish speaker.
