Johan Bergenas

Senior Vice President, Oceans Conservation

Johan is the senior vice president for Ocean Conservation at WWF-US, where he leads a global team working at the intersection of ocean health, climate resilience, and national security. His work centers on advancing solutions that deliver benefits for people, nature, prosperity, and peace. Johan represents WWF in collaborations with countries, multilateral institutions, the private sector, and civil society partners worldwide. Before joining WWF, Johan worked for Paul Allen’s Vulcan, leading global efforts to design and scale science and technology programs. He has co-founded and served as CEO of a technology start-up and previously led initiatives uniting environmental policy, national security, and technology at the Stimson Center and the Monterey Institute. He has also worked for political campaigns and as a public affairs consultant. Johan holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree from Georgetown University. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife, two children, and a rescue cat from Abu Dhabi.
