Fiji Coral Reef Resilience Project

The Fiji Coral Reef Resilience (CRR) Project will support vulnerable coastal communities in Fiji by protecting and restoring the Great Sea Reef, the third-largest barrier reef system in the world and one of Fiji’s most important natural assets and defense against storms, flooding, coastal erosion, and sea-level rise. The project will restore 3,359 hectares of mangrove and riparian forests connected to the GSR, implement living shoreline coastal protections, and bring more than 2.5 million hectares of coral reefs and vulnerable coastal areas under sustainable management.

Working with the Government of Fiji and local communities, the project will develop and implement a first of its kind GSR management unit within the Government of Fiji, strengthen community-based fisheries management, provide direct funding for locally led adaptation solutions, and support reef-positive business access to finance. Together, these investments will reduce climate risks for vulnerable coastal communities, strengthen livelihoods and food security, improve biodiversity, and help ensure that the Great Sea Reef continues to provide essential benefits for Fiji’s people and economy over the long term.
