Private Finance and Investments for Nature Positive: Developing a Framework and Guidance for Financial Institutions
There is an urgent need to tackle biodiversity loss and its associated risks. A lack of clear guidance and recognized strategies limits the ability of financial institutions to support the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity.

This Finance for Nature Positive (FfNP) project will address gaps in well-understood and harmonized definitions and criteria in nature finance by establishing a collaborative space for finance sector professionals to develop a comprehensive “Finance for Nature Positive” framework through a set of focus groups. The project will develop practical guidance meant to help financial institutions identify, assess, and prioritize investments and financing opportunities in both real economy players and countries, with the potential to contribute to the “nature positive goal” of halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030 by delivering measurable positive outcomes for biodiversity.
The project will build upon and operationalize the Finance for Nature Positive working model to produce the Finance for Nature Positive Framework. Furthermore, a set of implementation materials will help finance sector professionals to put the framework into practice, including case studies, country profiles, financing vehicles, and more, as well as a series of workshops and events. The project will contribute directly to GEF Core Indicator 11, with 600 beneficiaries from the finance sector who will have an increased understanding and appetite for nature positive outcomes. Supporting goal D and Target 19 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, the project will help catalyze increased financial flows towards nature-related opportunities through the application of the framework, which, over the long term, is expected to contribute to GEF Core Indicators 1,3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10.
